Beatrix Potter was inspired by her childhood with many pets and adventures of her own. Peter Rabbit not only features in his own tales, but appeared in five other stories, such as The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, where he and his cousin adventure back into Mr McGregor’s garden. Originally written as illustrated story letters for the children of her friend, and former governess, Beatrix Potter’s stories were made all the more special by her watercolour illustrations and the immersive world she created. ![]() One hundred and fifty years later, in celebration of her life and work, The Royal Mint released a series of four Fifty Pence pieces depicting four of her most popular characters: Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin, and this endearing portrait of beloved trouble-maker Peter Rabbit. Children’s author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter was born on 28 July 1866.
